Today, January 6, 2026, Sri Lanka's Parliament will hold its first meeting of the year. The session will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be led by Speaker of Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, as reported by the Parliamentary Secretariat. During this sitting, lawmakers will discuss regulations related to the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act and the Fishermen’s Pension and Social Security Benefit Scheme Act. Additionally, a resolution concerning a proclamation made under the Public Security Ordinance, which was published in an Extraordinary Gazette on December 28, will be up for debate. Another important item on the agenda is a resolution to form a Parliamentary Select Committee. This committee will look into how Provincial Council elections should be conducted and will offer recommendations. The Parliamentary session is set to continue until January 9, 2026, during which various Bills are expected to be introduced and approved.
