Arun Hemachandra, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment, announced that actions are being taken in collaboration with officials from the Sri Lankan High Commission in Seychelles. This is in response to the seizure and destruction of a foreign fishing vessel in Seychelles waters. The vessel, named ‘Ishani-1,’ left the Wennappuwa Wellamankaraya Fishery Harbour on December 07, 2025, carrying six fishermen. Seychelles authorities detained the boat on December 30, 2025, and later set it on fire, destroying it. The Deputy Minister mentioned that Sri Lankan officials are aware of the statement issued by Seychelles security forces and are closely working with the relevant authorities at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Seychelles to keep track of the situation. He also confirmed that consular assistance has been provided for the Sri Lankan fishermen who were on the vessel.
