A medium-sized Sri Lankan Navy vessel taking part in the Victory Day celebrations today capsized in the sea off the coast of Bambalapitiya.

The boat had capsized during the parade and two sailors have fallen abroad. Local media reports said one of the sailors was rescued while the searches are underway for the other sailor who was reported as missing.

Navy Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya has told local media that immediate steps had been taken to rescue the officers on board the vessel, as well as the vessel itself.

About 50 Navy vessels including Offshore Patrol Vessels, Fast Gun Boats, Fast Missiles Vessels, and Fast Attack Craft took part in the parade held today to celebrate the 4th anniversary of the war victory over the Tamil Tiger terrorists.

The Naval contingent comprised naval forces from the Western Naval Command, the Southern Naval Command, the Wanni Naval Command, the Eastern Naval Command and the Northern Naval Command. The respective Area Commanders also took part in the parade.

Several divisions including the 4th Fast Attack Craft Flotilla (FAF 4), Special Boat Squadron (SBS), women sailors and Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) were also among those participated in the national event.

How could this happen in 'shallow waters' close to the Capital?
Sabotage by the tiger terrorists who did not want to see the victory parade?
Has the missing sailor been rescued by now?
Some people consider this as a 'bad omen' for the Navy, the Defence Ministry as well the entire government headed by the President Rajapaksa !
