Sri Lanka s caddie-turned golfers, knowing the course like the back of their hands, beat wet weather conditions to put hosts ahead of their South Asian counterparts on day one of the historic 125th Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship at the Royal Colombo Golf Club yesterday.

43-year old Maasanam Arumugam grossed 1-under par and his team-mate Sisira Kumara grossed an even par as country s B team topped the best performers list for the hosts to have hopes of the team title.

They had a two-stroke lead over Sri Lanka s A team which included N. Ranga and defending champion N. Thangaraja, who vowed to fight back.

`I could not do well. I think everyone was affected by wet weather. But I will do my best tomorrow (today),` Thangaraja told The Island.

Arumugam, who had been associating with golf from when he was 18, said that weather was challenging yesterday, while Kumara, who turned 28 last week backed his team-mate praising his effort of producing the second best performance of the day behind Dulal Hossain of Bangladesh.

Hossain returned the best gross score of 2-under par (69) and his team was placed third behind Sri Lanka s B and A teams respectively.

Indian team comprising three times Sri Lanka Amateur Champion Simarjeet Singh and Angad Cheema were in the fourth place, 7 strokes behind the leading Sri Lankan B Team.

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Afghanistan and three Sri Lankan teams were in action yesterday.

It was a tradition continued when caddie-turned golfers dominated the field for Sri Lanka at the landmark event.

`We have seen caddie-turned golfers leading the tournament for Sri Lanka from the 1980s. Yes, it is indeed a continuation of that tradition,` said Ana Punchihewa, head of SLGU.
