Expo Rail - a good work by Railway

What an idea seach.....good to know that our transport system is gradually moving into the comfort zone.

[Expo Rail will be charging Rs. 1,200 per passenger for a return ticket on all-inclusive basis, whilst Rajadhani`s fee will be Rs. 850 without snacks.]

Seems very reasonable, If they can offer a clean, comfortable journey at a competitive price they will certainly get my vote. I remember fondly, as kids we used to in our school holidays take the train to visit such places as the Botanical Gardens at Peradeinya or the beaches in Gall.

I think the train lost it`s magic when the white van culture was introduced to Sri Lanka. But, I think with by offering luxury travel at a reasonable cost it can again capture the lost ground. I will defo be checking this service out in the near future.

Very good idea and reasonable prices. This might even slow down the increase of road-traffic between Colombo and Kandy.

[Excellent idea to allow private sector operators into the railway system]

I guess I did mention abt this in Ele`s page and also I mentioned how the Japanese railway improved and it was purely b`cos the railway was privatized! Many foriegners living in Japan who are friends of mine rate the Japanese railway is the best..I don`t know but the many people from other counties says so! RIGHT UPTO THE MARK and PUNCTUALITY..wow amazing!

So by hook or crook the gov shd privatize the railway and shd take not to put the burden on commuters! There shdn`t be another private tain mafia like the private bus mafia!

Railway Dept is the the most difficult public Dept to handle and deal and the Railway Unions don`t do anything to improve the quality neither they won`t allow any outsiders do anything and the best part is they don`t do! I have first hand experience abt this!

When CBK was the president, she tried her best to privatize! During her time the railway dept was in dire sitution and there was the need of repairing the railway lines and also to be improved so that trains could run at a faster speed! So the gov called tenders from many foriegn companies and a Japanese company submitted the lowest tender! So b4 awarding the contract to this particular Japanesse company, they were asked to repair the railway line from Dematagoda/Kelaniya to Ragama and they proved it with a fantastic job as when the train travels between those two stations, there were no jolts and the journey was smooth! The gov was very happy with the job and when all the docs were finalized, the railway engineers union and other unions, strongly OPPOSED saying that they can do it and Y waste money etc! CBK a lazy woman believed or had to give them to their demands abandoned the project! And believe me, after 3 or 5 years I left Sri Lanka for studies and up to that period nothing happened!

    :(

So my point is, it is good to have these Luxury services, but without improving the tracks, sometime later the quality of the service goes down!

Anyway, I am happy that atleast something is happening, but we have to see that all the people shd be able to use that luxury irrespective of their level in the society!

It is good but they have to continue this service and improve.

[So my point is, it is good to have these Luxury services, but without improving the tracks, sometime later the quality of the service goes down! ]

Ado that is the next step bang!

As usual we have something negative to say...

    and

[Ado that is the next step bang!]

    There is the answer...

[As usual we have something negative to say... ]

[So my point is, it is good to have these Luxury services, but without improving the tracks, sometime later the quality of the service goes down! ]

Is this is a NEGATIVE point?????????

Read carefully! It was not a naegative point, but the truth! As the quality of the intercity express service went down b`cos of the poor railway tracks and not repairing them! It was brought by some of the railway engineers who worked honestly as many a times the iNTERCITY EXPRESS trian had to be stopped cos of something wrong with the railway track or control systems!

I was a constant traveller in this route and know it very well how they do the job!! Later I was involved in a project related railway control systems and that is Y I gave a detailed explnation and I know how the people worked there! One of the WORST depts in Sri Lanka! The reailway workers even did not allow to upgrade the control systems...

Further IT WAS MY FAULT TO COME AND POST and I can imagine Y I got that answer..

If I dodn`t knew anything I wouldn`t have wasted my time writing a long detailed answer!

[Ado that is the next step bang!]

Did You know that there were a service called intercity express and was considered as LUXURY..

    Deborak Malli

No No..don`t take it a mess..appreciated your long post..what we are seeing is something new. yes I have traveled in the Intercity express and as you say it was considered as a luxury and comfortable..

I am sure once you have these Luxury services there will forced improvement to the Railway tracks..and it will happen...U said without improving the quality of the service will go down? I was wondering how? the trains might not be able to speed but people won`t mind as long as it is comfortable and the service levels are high..but again..agree with u..tracks to be improved..

O.K! Berty Anna, Sorry I misunderstood!

[...U said without improving the quality of the service will go down? I was wondering how? ]

B`cos the railway dept has got a time table and commuters do rely on that time table! Means, for example, lets`s say according to the time table that the Intercity express departs from Colombo at 8:00 in the morning and suppose to reach Kandy at 10:30 a.m. Now I am a traveller, and wants to be at Peradeniya at 11:00 a.m to attend a lecture starting at 11:00 a.m! So during the journey, if the train is getting late due to a poor condition of the railway track noticed by the morning shift labourers and they are in the process of rectifying, then I won`t be able to reach PEradeniya as expected! Same applies to poor control systems due to a power failure! If this happens only once in while then I am sure the commuters would understand!

And the simple rule is commuters do rely on the TRAIN TIME TABLE and I know that many office workers do travel in this train and they fume when the train is stopped even for 5 minutes b`cos of red signal!

[the trains might not be able to speed but people won`t mind as long as it is comfortable and the service levels are high.]

I will just ask a question from U! Of course I have given the answer to You in the top para of mine, but I want to get it cleared!

Suppose You decided to travel in a FULL luxurious train and your jorney starts in the morning and You expect to reach the destination at 3:00 p.m in the evening! Due to the poor maintenance of control sysyems and tracks, the train reaches the destination at 8:00 p.m! How would You react then? In that case we cannot call it a luxurious! It is the way I think!

Cos we had this LUXURY train service from long ago, and many a times there were suggestions to improve the control systems and tracks! You simply can`t do b`cos the railway workers think the railway dept is their OWN PROPERTY brought by birth! So having started this service even b4 CBK`s time, by now they shd have atleast improved it to give a better service and be punctual for the commuters who PAY MONEY and travel!

If they can do that, the PRIVATE BUS mafia will go down and will not be able to harrass the commuters!
