Close on the heels of his appointment of an expert panel to advise him on accountability issues relating to violations of international human rights and humanitarian law during the final stages of the conflict in Sri Lanka, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has had a bellyful of lecturing from an outgoing top UN official on transparency and accountability. Chief anti-corruption official of the UN or the Undersecretary General for the Office of Internal Oversight Services Inga-Britt Ahlenius has, in her goodbye missive, torn the UNSG to shreds. A former Swedish auditor and public servant, Ahlenius pulled no punches when she told her boss that he was a bureaucratic `weakling` who had reduced the UN to a `sad` and `perilous` state of `irrelevance by destroying accountability in his own house`.
Such scathing attacks are not common at the UN, where people are usually told to go to hell in such a way that they really look forward to the trip! What is the real cause of outspoken Ahlenius` choler? She accuses Ki-moon of having striven to undermine internal oversight which is a sine qua non for good governance. `Your actions are not only deplorable but seriously reprehensible,` she wrote to him in her 50-page memo, which was also leaked to the press.
So, this is the kind of man who is pontificating to others about the virtues of accountability!
No one else could be better informed of the nether side of the UN than Ahlenius and it is only natural that the world has taken very serious note of what she has said of Ban Ki-moon. US lawmakers lost no time in citing her vivisection as proof that the US taxpayers` money was being squandered to maintain the UN. Rep. Illeana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla said in a press release, `The stew of corruption, mismanagement and negligence long plaguing the UN has reached a boiling point.`
Ahlenius`s diatribe will give the on-going campaign for UN reforms a turbo boost. The incumbent UNSG`s conduct is `deplorable and reprehensible` not only where internal oversight is concerned it is equally so as regards how the UN is being manipulated by him at the behest of a few western governments to promote the cause of some terror lobbies on the pretext of protecting human rights. With such bureaucrats at its helm, the UN needs no enemies! Look at the way Ki-moon and his ilk have sought to bypass the Human Rights Council and the Security Council to achieve their sinister objective of harassing Sri Lanka by appointing an advisory panel, which is widely seen as a precursor to a war crimes probe.
Visiting Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake in Colombo on Wednesday held a brief for the UNSG and his expert panel. He said the UN had the experience to perform the role it had chosen to play in relation to Sri Lanka. The US has been urging the Sri Lankan government to accept and co-operate with the Moon Panel.
If Blake really believes that the UNSG`s action is good for Sri Lanka, why doesn`t he call for a UN advisory panel on the accountability issues relating to violations of international human rights and humanitarian law during the US-led military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq? Since the UN, as he says, has the experience to play a positive role as regards such matters, the US could seek Ban Ki-moon`s assistance to better its human rights record in those war ravaged countries.
Whom is Blake trying to fool?
Finally, since Blake has poked his meddlesome nose into an internal affair of this country by calling for the implementation of 17th Amendment which its proponents claim to be the only way to bring about good governance in this country we would like to know from him what his government proposes to do with the stew of corruption, mismanagement and negligence long plaguing the UN?
Sauce for the goose, Mr. Blake may agree, is sauce for the gander!

Sri Lanka knows how to solve its problems. Tell Moon to appoint a commitee to probe atrocities in Afganistan & Iraq. Shame on you white masters...... |

For seom people we should protest and we should show our dislike.
For some others, we should allow them to hit the walls and destroy they themselves.
What ever it is, MR is doing good things too. |

'Your actions are not only deplorable but seriously reprehensible,'
Chief anti-corruption official of the UN or the Undersecretary General for the Office of Internal Oversight Services Inga-Britt Ahlenius, says so only when she leaves her office. Why couldn't she say so while she was holding her post? Coward. |

| Operation Nimrod April 30th 1980. Terrorist seized Iran embassy in London.Margaret Tacher permits her SAS to storm the embassy and release the hostages.Terrorists were killed at point blank range and some who showed white flags were gunned down except for one who was able to escape onto the street and avoid being gunned down by the SAS in public. Ban ki,you should appoint a panel to advise you on this matter too. You too afraid of the white sharks? |
