SL Army, Prisons directed to provide maximum security for Fonseka

Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Rashmi Singappuli yesterday directed the Army and the Prisons Officials to provide maximum security for General (Rtd) Sarath Fonseka when he is brought to Court and back.

The Judge further remanded General Sarath Fonseka and Capt. Senaka Harippriya de Silva, the election secretary of General Sarath Fonseka, till July 26.

At the outset Senior Defence Counsel Nalin Ladduwahetti submitted to Court that there is a threat to his client and to direct the security personnel to provide maximum security for him when he is brought to Court and taken back from court.

Senior State Counsel Dammith Totawatta also said that suspect General Fonseka should be given maximum security as there is a threat to his life. Earlier Tirantha Walaliyadda, Senior Counsel for the Capt. de Silva submitted that his client had been remanded illegally.

Deputy Solicitor General Wasantha Navaratne Bandara appeared for the prosecution with the CID told Court that the Attorney General had requested the Chief Justice to hear this case before three High Court Judges - Trial at Bar.

CID Director Senior SP Wijeya Amerasinghe was also present in Court during the proceedings.

ASP Senaka Kumarasinghe with Inspector Anura Silva appeared for the Criminal Investigations Department.

Nalin Ladduwahetti with Ajith Pathirana, Nilanthi Peiris, Nishanda Gamage. D. Bandara appeared for General (Rtd) Sarath Fonseka. The case will be called again on July 26.
