The Sri Lankan government maintains it will not formally respond to the EU letter sent last week with a set of conditions to obtain GSP plus, despite the deadline to respond looming and the EU saying it was awaiting an official reply.
External Affairs Minister G.L Peiris told reporters last week that he will not respond to the EU letter and Ministry sources told Daily Mirror online the government remains firm on that stand and will not even send a formal letter to the EU rejecting the set of conditions.
The government is firm that it will not even send a formal letter to the EU as a rejection or any sort of response to the EU. There will not be any communication with the EU on this matter, a top official at the External Affairs Ministry told Daily Mirror online.
EU High Representative/Vice-President Catherine Ashton and Commissioner De Gucht invited the Government of Sri Lanka to respond to the concerns by 1st of July and give a written commitment to implement some recommendations in order to obtain a temporary extension of the GSP for the country which ends in August this year.
Minister G.L Peiris, who is authorized to respond to the letter, is due to fly to Ukraine on Tuesday with President Mahinda Rajapaksa on an official visit, just two days before the deadline to respond to the EU letter expires.
The Brussels based European Commission press officer for Trade Marie Antonie Kerwien had told Daily Mirror online over the weekend that so far, the government of Sri Lanka has made its views known only to the media and so the EU would therefore prefer to recieve the official answer of Sri Lanka before communicating its next step.
However the press officer noted that the European Commission remains committed to support Sri Lanka in its efforts to tackle the challenges it faces in terms of human rights, reconstruction and reconciliation and if Sri Lanka so wishes, is ready to continue the dialogue on the necessary steps to bring the country into compliance with the relevant international conventions and to become again eligible for GSP+ benefits in the future.

Let it go that's better. Who told you that EU has given GSP+ concessions to help poor in countries. That is what you see and what you told. But the real picture is different one. Without this poor nations EU can not keep their commodity prices low against the competitors in the world. This is just a fox s play showing lamb s face.
I dare you to say this, if all GSP+ users can give just a week strike, you can see the real effect. If you don t understand above try to understand this. How many European can pay 100$ for an underwear. (European made underwear cost 100$ but poor made is 1.50$)

| The government has taken a firm and correct decision on this matter. We ask government to take such firm decisions for other matters when ruling the country. Such as law and order , recruiting, promotios ........ that is the way to develop our country. Go ahead good luck MR |

Thank you very much for telling the real situation. Not only apperals but also food and every thing can apply your argument. In the markets of western countries, most vegetables ,fruits and other comodities are from poor countries. If they grow these things in their countries the cost would be much higher,
we should be able to produce quality products and put into the competitive market and we should not beg behind EU or any other. |

What baffles me is that the GOSL has told the EU in no uncertain terms many a time that Sri Lanka will not accept conditions along with the GSP+. The GOSL has told the EU that if they want to give the concessions condition free they could do so or else Sri lanka does not need the concessions.
This does not seem to be going into the heads of those in the EU. Why do they keep coming back again and again saying they are willing to talk and negotiate and do this that and everything when the GOSL has made it's stand manifestly clear to the EU many many times.
Why is the EU so keen on giving the concessions with conditions when the GOSL keeps on telling the EU to 'go and hang'?????? Is it that the EU loves to pay $5 for a shirt to Sri lanka and then sell the same shirt in the EU for $50-$60 and they simply cannot live without exploiting Sri lanka??????
The fact is that the EU needs the cheap labour in Sri lanka to fullfil it's requirement for bras and panties lingerie and other stuff. There is no one in the EU to stitch the stuff so cheap for them. If it's stitched in the EU the 'suddis' in the EU will not be able to afford to buy bras and panties anyore and will have to walk about braless and pantyless!!
The EU needs Sri Lanka but Sri Lanka does not need the EU. Edited By - kiwikanga - 28 Jun 2010 21:27:42 GMT |

Poor world know nothing about their own strength. If they are intelligent enough to play the game correct they can get all fancy rich Developed Nations on to their knees. They are rich for fancy that s all. You know why?
EU/US You can add some more developed countries heir if you like. My argument is same to all.
DEVELOPED Countries are just like deserts in the world that trapped in economic black hole, have no comeback. All fellow citizens are slaves of that economy. To keep this condition balanced they need poor counties or they need to make counties poor. |
