Newly appointed Minister Wimal Weerawansa said yesterday, that the Cabinet of Ministers of post war Sri Lanka, would have to work for the protection and development of a country which has been liberated by the armed forces at great sacrifice, in the same selfless spirit of dedication.
The Leader of the National Freedom Front, a member of the ruling United People s Freedom Alliance, Weerawansa assumed duties as the Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities at the Ministry in Sethsiripaya in Battaramulla. Senior Presidential Advisor and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa was the chief guest.
Addressing a packed gathering, Weerawansa said that during his tenure as a parliamentarian, this was the first time he was appointed a minister. He thanked those who helped him to succeed in his political life so far.
`We sacrificed a lot to liberate the country from the LTTE. We were able to provide political leadership to the humanitarian missions. Now was the time to develop the country. It was the responsibility of the new Cabinet,` he said.
Accompanied by his wife and children, Weerawansa solicited the support of all, including religious leaders and journalists .
`This Ministry has been formed by merging two former ministries, Housing, Common Amenities, Construction and Engineering Services which was held by Ferial Ashroff and Dr. Rajitha Senaratne respectively. I ll serve all irrespective of their political affiliations.`
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said that Weerawansa s ministry was especially linked with the country s development and the service of the ministry would not only be confined to his electoral district of Colombo and his party supporters, but to all citizens of the country.
Rajapaksa pledged his wholehearted support to Weerawansa s ministry.
He emphasised the responsibility of the post war Cabinet and according to the Mahinda Chinthanaya, the government would provide houses to all.
Deputy Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities, Lasantha Alagiyawanna also assumed duties at the same venue.
