It is on his or her face that a politician usually has egg. But, Conservative Leader David Cameron has had egg on his shoulder! We reported yesterday that he had been hit with an egg during a campaign stop in southwest England on Wednesday. However, he did not chicken out. Nor did his sense of humour desert him! He laughed it off joking, `Now I know which came first the chicken and not the egg.`
What happened to the egg thrower? He was taken into custody but released after it was established that he did not possess, of all things, more eggs! And what would have happened here if someone had dared hurl an egg at a political potentate? He would have had his cranium cracked in no time at the hands of political goons adept at breaking human bones and skulls. In this country, politicians are even free to assault electors for not voting for them, as was reported from the Kalutara District the other day. (As for why eggs are not thrown at Sri Lankan politicians, a wag says that of late eggs have become as expensive as gems and, therefore, the people cannot afford the luxury of wasting them on political dregs!)
Does this mean that Britain is more democratic than Sri Lanka as commoners could go about throwing eggs at bad eggs in politics? Or, are the British politicians more civilised than their Sri Lankan counterparts simply because they take indignities like egg attacks lying down? While giving Cameron the credit for his sterling conduct on Wednesday, let`s not make the mistake of answering the aforesaid questions in the affirmative. For, it was in London that the police set upon an innocent Brazilian youth and shot him dead at close range in a subway in the wake of the 2005 London bombings. Not even an egg was found in the poor boy`s possession!
One is reminded of an abominable shoe attack that former US President George W. Bush came under in Baghdad in 2008 during a surprise visit. An irate Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at Bush in protest against the US-led invasion of his country. Bush like Cameron remained composed and laughed off the attack with a funny joke. But, the shoe thrower in Baghdad was not as lucky as the egg thrower in London he had himself roughed up and thrown behind bars for his `crime`.
The Conservatives currently led by Cameron, who graciously forgave an egg thrower, unflinchingly threw their weight behind Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Bush, who together unleashed hell on Iraq and Afghanistan. The Tories including Cameron are therefore responsible for the killing of tens of thousands of men, women and children in those two countries.
It is not only egg throwers that the British politicians handle with kid gloves. They are known for indulging even bomb throwers in other countries. As a result, London has become a haven for terrorists of all sorts except those who are a threat to the British and American interests. While the LTTE was using suicide bombers to eliminate political leaders in Colombo, the British lawmakers treated the terror masterminds on their soil exactly the way Cameron handled the egg thrower on Wednesday.
If Britain and the rest of the West had not sponsored the LTTE, this country would have freed itself from the clutches of terrorism a long time ago and perhaps some democratic space would have been created by now for the ordinary Sri Lankans to indulge in throwing eggs at their beloved representatives in public without fearing reprisals. We are sure that they look forward to that day!
