A group that would fulfill aspirations of the masses and who are trustworthy should be elected to Parliament says national list candidate of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Anura Dissanayake. He said the detestable politics of crossing over from one party to another has come to a stage that even candidates for the general election cross over.
Speaking at a press conference held yesterday (1st) Mr. Dissanayake said, The Democratic National Alliance has taken measures to establish committees in villages and every polling centre to protect polling booths. A programme has been prepared to monitor transport of ballot boxes and counting. We have taken measures to minimize certain manipulations carried out by the government during the presidential elections.
There are two ways of forming governments. One is to get a majority of members elected and form a government. The other is to collect a majority of members already elected to the Parliament and form the government. We have paid our attention to the second one. Specially, there is a big crisis within the SLFP. It is the people who have invaded the SLFP that are in the forefront of the election campaign. According to my knowledge the President visited two houses in Colombo District. One house is that of Rohithe Bogollagama. The other is the residence of Dhanasiri Amaratunga. The President did not visit Fowzy s house he used to have meals sometimes. This shows who President s favourites are. We also saw Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse addressing meetings from Duminda Silva s stages. Throughout the election campaign we could see that the President and members of Rajapakse family do not favour members of the SLFP.
They have made those who have been tamed by offering various privileges their closest henchmen. As such, a certain crisis is developing within the SLFP throughout the election campaign. We feel this would create a very favourable situation in the Parliament. Today the UPFA doesn t say who their parliamentary candidate is. We could use this situation, the resentment between members of the UPFA to form a government of reconciliation.
Under this government of reconciliation we hope to develop national unity, health service, education and establish media freedom. We have presented a programme of 10 proposals for such a development. Hence, we call upon the masses to send candidates who are patriotic and uncorrupt to the Parliament.
A candidate of the UNP in Gampaha District has crossed over to the government recently. If the candidates are leaving the party what could we expect from the elected Members? A wicked political culture is being formed in the country. Hence, a strong team should be elected from the opposition. Such trustworthy people can be found only in Democratic National Alliance. Messrs. Jayanthe Katagoda, Arjuna Ranathunga and several others who have retired from the Army have joined our election process under very difficult conditions. Hence, only Gen. Sarath Fonseka s alliance has put forward people who could be trusted and who could honestly serve the people and the country.
Former Parliamentarian from Colombo District Jayanthe Katagoda also participated.
