Former Army Commander and defeated presidential candidate General (retd) Sarath Fonseka will face a Court martial today, at Navy Headquarters, on three charges including that of participating in politics while in office.
Today s court martial would be the first ever military trial against an officer of the highest rank in the history of the Sri Lanka Army.
A three-member tribunal comprising Majors General named by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, on the instructions of the Army Commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya would try the ex-army chief at a special Court to be set up at the Navy Headquarters.
General Fonseka is entitled to retain lawyers of his choice.
Another trial on four charges, including that of violating military procurement procedures, would commence tomorrow (17).
The Court Martial is held in accordance with the Sections 124 (1), 102 and 109 of the Army Act.

Well some 20 years ago there was a lunatic call RP..The monkey thought he will rule for ever but sadly he went to the land of no return in a plastic bag.
Motta Rala should realise this, that he is been sorrounded, guarded by the very men who worship SF. Its a matter of time. The 7Eleven Toilet Cleaners Clup (7ETC Clup) will have no place to hide. |

The military tribunal had condescended to a Kangaroo court. No wonder the high standard of the military Gen Fonseka maintained had deteriorated to the level of Gotabhaya and MR .
The court martial trying Gen Sarath Fonseka (59), now a sworn political enemy of President Mahinda Rajapakse, whom he challenged in January s presidential elections, was adjourned to April 6th after the former army chief s lawyers challenged the court s legitimacy and questioned the composition of the military tribunal.
They claimed the three-member military panel was biased, as it included two officers Gen Fonseka had disciplined when he was army chief, while the third was a close relative of the current military commander who initiated the court martial.
