Ampara district UNP leader for parliamentary election and the Eastern Provincial Council Opposition leader Mr Daya Gamage addressing a UNP district committee meeting and said that all UPFA candidates in the district are completely strangers to the area.
He said once the election is over all UPFA candidates will pack and get back to their original places and their will not be a single candidate to serve the area.
Mr Gamage said that a long standing SLFP members in this are has been side-lined, who toiled their sweat for the SLFP`s betterment .
At present our farmers are facing a lot of difficulties with the increasing the cost of production. Today, productivity level in a hectare has come down to 400 Kg. A farmer has to spend more than Rs 14000 to cultivate a one hectare of paddy, he explained.
The reason being for these issues are that, to maintain the stable market price, the government imports rice from other countries. Therefore, middleman compelled to buy rice at a lower price due to the importation of low riced rice. Last season the government standard price for paddy was Rs 35 for a one kilogram and now it has come down between Rs 18 to 20,he said.
Today, the cost of living has been increased dramatically and prices will further go up after the election, he said. Mr Gamage questioned what has happen to the government`s Appi Wavamu Rata Nagamu concept. The country`s economy is in chaotic condition and all Central Bank reports have been manipulated to show the people that country`s economy is growing. When Mahinda Rajapaksa took over his office in 2005 cost of a bag of cement was Rs 250 and it has now being increased to Rs 850 . Therefore, people cannot afford to construct houses for their own. Normally to construct a house, it needs 60 bags of cement. Under a UNP regime they intend to supply 60 bag of cement for a house free of charge, he said..
Mr Gamage emphasized to purchase paddy at Rs 35 in Ampara district in the future.
