There is much potential and a good market for the motorcycles in the Northern and Eastern provinces. During the last month there has been a growth of 300 percent in the motorcycle sales compared to the corresponding year s January growth.
The company expects a growth of 25 percent in the motorcycle segment this year, Stafford Motor Company Ltd., Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Kalinga Kaluperuma told Daily News Business.
He said Sri Lanka is setting a new benchmark in the 125-cylinder capacity which recorded 41 percent growth by December last year.
The main reason for this is that the 125cc motorbikes caters to all types of customers like self-employed and the mercantile executive, and compared to the duties of a four-wheel vehicle, the motorbike duties are much lesser.
The motorcycle industry showed a growing trend from end last year and we see a progress in the motorcycle sales.
Therefore, the company foresaw the high demand and opportunity in the motorbike market and that was one of the reasons to unveil its new foray into the mass segment Honda Shine, Dr. Kaluperuma said.
The Honda Shine 125cc was launched at the Excel World on Friday.
The motorcycle does not have asbestos in its engine. The Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (Pvt) Ltd., (HMSI) is particular about the emissions and the company will introduce the Euro IV emission standard by March, which the HMSI is currently applying the Euro III.
Dr. Kaluperuma said due to the high taxation of vehicle imports the company had a loss of Rs 9 million last year.
The company is optimistic about this year. If the vehicle imports duties are reduced we could also expect a higher growth in the four-wheel segment, he said.
Stafford Motor Company, is the sole distributor for Honda products in Sri Lanka.

Country is returning to the Normalcy, and this is the time to work hard.......
To elevate the National Pride, we need to produce our own engine (Perhaps a kerosene powered (Mobile).
Let it be a good one or let it be a bad one.... But, it will be ours. We will authorize you to name it in any which way you want (You will be remebered in the same way, as Wimalasurendra Balagaraya. When compares to the other engineering fields and application of them on the mass benefit, Sri Lankan Mech. Grads have done nothing for the Country. These are the laziest type, and their involvement in the infra structure development of Sri Lanka in minimum. What a lazy bunch of people, are they ?
Why they cannot design atleast a Kerosene Engine (Name it as a PeraKatu)? Are they got Kerosene in the brain (as desmond sings)?
Why those Katubeddians cannot request government to give some access to Ceylon Steel to cast some damn detals to start the project ?
If we can make a Cheaper engine, which can be used with Kerosene, that will help our local farmers.
Design a small engine and sell it through the government. Mech. Katubeddians and Lazy Peras should show their colours to the Nation at this time.
Make a Fun Project Boyzzzzz and Girlzzzzz........

I agree with MoneyTalks. Our Mechanical Guys are yet to prove their skills. Both Moratuwa and Peras are doing nothing...(Don't get irritated, I am a Dr. Mervin's Friend_*#@!)
Civils did great with Mahaweli, and we still remember Concrete Kulasinghe (Dr. kulasinghe, though he is not from Mora or Pera.
Elecs probably the best in Asia. Really good power engineers.
Computer and Software is excellent, everybody knows lankan talent.
But, why you are failing ? Shall we send some goons ? |

LankaPride and Dr. Mervin challenge cup to a person, who highlight a talented mechanical engineer (not in Journal Papers, not in nowhere gone research, but in practical applied mechanical engineering.....
Challenge is on. Dr. Mervin will announce the winner, (after considering my suggestions). |

I phoned Dr. Mervin, and he says that it is not worth to make a local engine for National Pride. He thinks that it is a silly idea to go behind a design, which is known to everybody.
I am out of challenge..... |
