Threats and international pressure Sri Lanka has come under because of her successful war on terror are highly disproportionate to her size and influence. Perhaps, no other small democratic country has suffered so much of harassment at the hands of global powers.
What is Sri Lanka`s crime? She has defeated terrorism in spite of the US, the EU and Norway. A bony Chihuahua has beaten daylight out of the monster of terrorism which has sent the western mastiffs running for cover with tails between their muscular legs.
Sri Lanka`s tormentors have laid bare their true faces. They may have condemned Prabhakaran and the LTTE for crimes such as drug smuggling, gun running, massacres, violent suppression of dissent, bombing civilian targets, child recruitment etc. But, we now know their opposition to the LTTE was only a fa ade. Today, thanks to the LTTE`s defeat and the subsequent arrest of its self-appointed new leader KP, the outfit`s arms and narcotics smuggling operations have come to a halt there are no massacres and children are free from abductions in the North and the East. Nobody is dying because of the conflict at present. But, the former critics of the LTTE have shut their eyes tight to the benefits of people`s deliverance from terrorism and to the need to help resettle the war displaced and rebuild their lives. They are weeping buckets for IDPs now, though they did not utter a word of protest against Prabhakaran, when he kept civilians under his jackboot. They are obviously using the IDPs plight as an instrument to further their sinister interests. The cause of their consternation is patently clear.
Some members of the international community and their local hangers on did not want the LTTE eliminated, though they pretended to be against its terrorism. Western powers turned Sri Lanka into a playground of theirs, having gained a foothold on the pretext of conflict resolution. (Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said last year that India could not have a playground of international players in her backyard.) They wanted to keep terrorism in Sri Lanka at a manageable level. Separatists who were wary of fighting for Eelam and did not want blood on their elitist hands expected Prabhakaran to carve out Eelam by hook or by crook or obtain something that could be used as a stepping stone to secession and perish in the process so that they could enjoy fruits of his labour.
Prabhakaran saw through that strategy and started assassinating those pusillanimous yet wily elements. Some of them have survived the Tigers but are without any means of realising their dream. Prabhakaran has died prematurely! Therefore, they have turned to their foreign masters who are desirous of having a playground in India`s backyard to further their mutual interests. Together they are all out to create an environment conducive to a comeback of secessionist forces. A prerequisite for the success of their project is effecting a regime change and installing a puppet government. It is for this purpose that they are in overdrive mode preparing the ground for pressing war crime charges against the present government. Unfortunately for them, they are without any evidence and have cut a very pathetic figure by trying to use doctored videos as proof of war crimes. Some of them are trying to dupe the world into believing that the IDP centres in the Vanni are `Concentration Camps` similar to those in Nazi Germany.
If the welfare villages for IDPs were `concentration camps`, then they would be clear proof of war crimes. And the first person who should be hauled up before the International Criminal Court for war crimes is UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. For, the UN is involved in running those `Concentration Camps`!
Meanwhile, the LTTE backers in Tamil Nadu are trying to give a boost to the on-going anti-Sri Lanka campaign. Some of them have claimed the Sri Lanka Navy has killed over 50 Indian fishermen over the past two weeks! They are demanding that the Central Government intervene to save the Indian fishermen and facilitate their poaching in the Sri Lankan waters!
The Sri Lanka Navy has dismissed this claim as a blatant lie. Indian politicians made a similar allegation against Sri Lanka in early 2007. They blamed the disappearance of a trawler named Sri Krishna and its crew on Sri Lanka. Later, the vessel was intercepted while transporting arms for the LTTE and sunk by the Maldivian Coast Guard off the Maldives. And the man at the helm at that time was an Indian! The LTTE quietly released the Sri Krishna crew it had abducted and held in the Vanni. So much for the Tamil Nadu politicians` claims and their tirade against Sri Lanka!
