Sapugaskanga: The Sapugaskanda Police have arrested a robber gang wanted for a number of high profile robberies during the last five months in the Western Province and recovered goods worth around Rs. 7.5 million robbed from shops, hardware stores, supermarkets and liquor outlets.
Three vans used by the gang have been seized.
The gang was arrested following a liquor shop robbery at Galpottha, Makola. The police received information that the gang had been selling their loot at cheaper prices.
The police had first arrested a woman and two men who had collaborated with the gang, OIC of Sapugaskanda Police, Chief Inspector M. P. E. Ranaweera told The Island.
There were six members in the robber gang from areas such as Polonnaruwa, Dompe and Biyagama, he said adding that they had spent money mostly on drugs.
Some of them had constructed large houses and purchased luxury vehicles.
CI Ranaweera said the gang had used rented vehicles for robberies.
The suspects have admitted to robbing 41 shops including 16 liquor outlets.
