The Forum of the Basnayake Nialmes (BN) of Sri Lanka revealed that there are only 98 domesticated elephants now in Sri Lanka following the death of the she elephant at Kadugannawa on Friday.
The number of tamed elephants dwindled fast during the part few years as they died due to old age.
There were more than 120 of them a few years and the number decreased as 60 per cent of them were over 70 years, the Forum said.
The she elephant which died while returning to her master at Hemmathagama after participating in the Kandy Esala Perahera was over 70 years of age, the Basnayake Nialmes forum said.
The gradual decease of the number of tamed elephant poses a threat to the conducting of religious festivals in the country, the Forum s president Basnayake Nilame of Sri Pathini Devale, Kandy Rohan Paranagama told to media conference on Friday.
Sri Dalada Maligawa and the devales, the abodes of the guardian deities customarily held four festivals annually and they all needed elephants. The relic caskets are carried on the back of the elephants, Paranagama said.
`This is a matter to be given priority by the government. The authorities must either provide tamed elephants or re-consider the issue of permits to capturing elephants from the wild`, he noted.
Basnayake Nilame of Pasgama Natha Devale said that the tamed elephants lived longer than wild elephants.
Many of the elephants in the jungle came across death by natural causes or accidents while some others are killed by poachers and others, he said.
The alternative is to capture wild elephants and hand over to the custodians of the devales and vihares conducting annual festivals, Walisundara added.
Secretary of the forum Basnayake Nilame of Alawathugoda Maha Saman Devale Jayampathy Heenkenda and several others spoke.
Basnayake Nilame of Sri Vishnu Devale of Kandy and of Aluthnuwara Dedimunda Devale Mohan Panabokke and Basnayake Nialmes of several other devales were present at the media conference held at Suisse Hotel, Kandy.

still it is not a ethical thing to separate those baby elephants from their mothers.. at such a young age....
Basnayake Nilame of Pasgama Natha Devale said that the tamed elephants lived longer than wild elephants.
why making these kinds of excuses???? perhaps the Government should bring in new plans on taking care of the Elephants in the wild.... where they actually belong.... anyways these kinds of excuses are a clear sign of the Nilame trying to justify what he did!! |
