Terrorists and pariah states

[Had the US, the EU, India etc brought adequate pressure to bear on the LTTE, Prabhakaran would have had to release civilians a long time ago]

While MR has archived a great task by virtually eliminating the LTTE he lacks characteristic that makes one an respected international leader. For instance, he has lost lot of respect and support for SL through his poor human rights record. Had he waged the war with less corruption, more media freedom and better human rights record (i understand that in war despite best efforts civilians die but i refer specifically instances where people have disappeared from their homes etc)he would had more international media and US on side. UK and EU is unlikely to ever support a military solution due to large number of Tamil diaspora.

Getting international support was one thing Ranil Wickremasinghe was good at. Unfortunately he is in the opposition.

    Jayman

tell me one war that any nation has fought in the history of mankind with a good human rights record?

tell me of one war any nation has fought and won with a good HR record?

Ranil W was a looser...in so many ways.. he gave in too much to lpte and got cheated on by them in elections... that in itself is enough evidence why he shouldn`t be leading this country...

as bad as you want to talk of MR and arguably there are quite a few things you can say against him with enough evidence to back it up...he has beaten the snot out worlds no.1 terras... You can`t expect that sorta victory to come without a price...

    Dauntless,

What MR has achieved is a victory in a true sense of the word to the country or not, only time will tell.

If he had advanced a political solution based on APRC it would have been formidable, and the reconciliation among the communities would have been much easier as well. But, as it stands now, only the Sinhalese who regard this as a victory, and the rest await subjugation.

My view however is that, Sri Lanka will go through many more phases of turmoils in the absence of a political accommodation, before one sees anything tangible!

[The biggest roadblock to peace is the LTTE and it must be physically eliminated. There is no other way out. Any country that tries to stop Sri Lanka`s war on terror and save Prabhakaran, the homicidal maniac, deserves pariah status.]

I agree that LTTE is an obsticle for peace. But, author of this article very liberally attributed pariah status to other nations, but fail to categorise Sri Lanka as a country that has failed to politically accommodate the minorities 25 years on. There is no consensus among the Sinhala polity, and failed miserably in the quest of nation building! What one can attribute to such a nation? What is pariah? Why one should use this term when it is being used to dehumanize socially a group of people.
