Minister Dallas Alahapperuma has made a splash in the run up to the WPC polls. He says the army has stumbled upon an LTTE video of some southern politicians frolicking with Prabhakaran in his swimming pool!
The government, the minister says, will not make the video public until April 25, when the WPC polls are scheduled to be held, as it does not want to be accused of making political capital out of that expose. Whether the government has in its possession any such tape or not we do not really know but as for its claim that it does not seek to press home its advantage, we say: Come on, Mr. Minister tell that to the Marines!
That southern politicians got into the same bath as Prabhakaran is no news. The history of the present conflict is replete with several such instances. Whenever Prabhakaran got into hot water, he would tell the gullible government leaders, `Come on in, the water`s fine!` In this land where a sucker is born every minute, several temerarious leaders would dive into peace-making with the Tiger chief slap-bang.
Only President Mahinda Rajapaksa had the wisdom to dip his toe in, avoid blind plunges in dealing with Prabhakaran and allow the latter to have the pleasure of drowning after the capture of the Mavil Aru anicut in 2006. And he also let repeated calls from the LTTE for ceasefires sink like a lead balloon without giving the wily Tiger chief a breather to regroup and rearm.
No amount of ablution will help Prabakaran wash away the blood of innocent men, women and children. He, even with one foot in the grave, continues to disport himself in bloodletting. And all the perfumes of Arabia (as well as Scandinavia) will not sweeten his sullied plump hand. Nor will he ever be able to revive his Eelam project which is dead in the water.
Swimming with terrorists is as bad as sleeping with them! Prabhakaran would never have got into a swimming pool with his guests unless he had had a very intimate relationship with them. So, the public have a right to know who those swimmers were. (Did they have striped swimwear on?)
The government is duty bound to telecast the video at issue without further delay. It is puzzling why a government which has no qualms about character assassination and mud-slinging baulks at exposing Prabhakaran`s friends who may have curried favour with the LTTE at the expense of national security interests.
Let the government expose Prabhakaran`s southern chums in swimsuits or be exposed for misleading the public.
Come on, Minister Alahapperuma, don`t keep people in suspense!
