Mayor of Colombo Mohamed U. Imtiyas said he was still the City father and was ready to contest a future national election if President Mahinda Rajapaksa allowed him to do so.
Mr. Imtiyas told the Daily Mirror yesterday that he would also back President Rajapaksa in the coming presidential election.
He said he was still working for the city dwellers as their city father and that was the reason he was still occupying the Mayor s Bungalow and receiving other perks. I am continuously working for the people and am prepared to do anything for them if they ask for help, he said.
Mr. Imtiyas said all the other members of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) were also working for the people.
I don t care what anyone from the opposition or anyone else says about my using the official bungalow as they cannot afford to talk because they have enjoyed all the perks without doing any thing for the people, he added.
Referring to the ongoing Commission on the CMC he said it would take one or two months to complete it. He said he was still with the Deputy Mayor and the Leader of the Spectacle group which was backing the UPFA.
Several politicians including some UNPers and present Administrator of the CMC,Omar Kamil charged that Mr. .Imtiyas was illegally occupying the Mayor s Bungalow. Some of the UPFA members of the CMC were opposing the present Mayor and also criticizing the commission of inquiry which was going on. One UPFA member of the Colombo Municipal Council said he had refrained from attending the commission sessions as it was a waste of time.
