If Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa wins a second term at an early presidential election two years ahead of the scheduled time, he will have to forfeit two years of his first term, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, MP told a press conference at party headquarters yesterday.

Responding to The Island queries, Dissanayake said that a Supreme Court ruling given during the tenure of President Rajapaksa s predecessor, Chandrika Kumaratunga said that the incumbent president could not retain the remaining period in the event of his/her winning a second term at a premature election.

Asked to explain, he said that if an incumbent president lost his bid for a second term at an early election, he would automatically forfeit the remaining period won at the previous poll. In keeping with this, an incumbent president winning a second term could not be entitled to anything more than six years, he said.

He expressed confidence that the judiciary would ensure transparency and prevent any party from manipulating the system.

He urged President Rajapaksa to complete his full term without seeking to manipulate the election process to the advantage of the Rajapaksas . He said the President still believed that an early presidential election would be advantageous to him as all UPFA members could be expected to throw their weight behind his campaign.

The JVP Central Committee member said that if the President called an early presidential election, the JVP would do its utmost to defeat the President. Responding to our queries, he said that the next presidential election could even be a three-cornered fight with the JVP backing a candidate other than the candidate fielded by the UNP-led United National Alliance. He emphasised that their strategy would be very much different from one adopted in the event of a presidential election being held two years from now.

The JVPer said that the President had reduced the Cabinet as well as Parliament to just rubber stamps. He said that the Rajapaksas had direct control of about 80 per cent of public funds whereas the 110 members of the Cabinet handled the rest. The cabinet could be easily reduced as many had absolutely nothing to do, he said, adding that they should be ashamed to remain in the ruling coalition.

M.R. will not hold the Presidential elections before the General elections as Sarath F has put a spanner in the political works of the Rajapakses.MR would not risk his political future as he still has 2 yrs left in his Presidency.Although the Govt has won the P.C elections, the General Elections will not be a cake walk for the Govt. The true Political polarization will be seen only on the dissolution of Parliament.

He can easily make up for the lost two years by abolishing the Executive Presidency during the last days of his 2nd term and make his entry to Parliament as PM.

What no one knows is what will happen four years from now.

NO. INCORRECT. These JVP parrots do not know anything correctly. ( Although they think they know averything) . They do not want to learn anything because they are the pundits of everything.

MR will NOT loose anything. He can hold election any day after 4 years and wait to take oath until he completes his current session. Chandrika lost 1 year in her second chance because she took oath 1 year in advance without knowing the law and no body advised her against it. This fact is clearly given in the said verdict by Supreme Court.

These JVP parrots try their best to mislead people. Always faild.

You are absolutely correct. If not for the support of the JVP Trade Unions they would have been voices in the wilderness. They mislead Chandrika and now trying to on MR who is a seasoned and a crafty Politician.

Shivering my foot,No politician shivers in Mother Lanka, MR crookishly won the presidency by conniving with poor Velupillai Prabakaran (Contacting through Alles & Mangala) and Wimal Weerawangsa (playing on the electoral list denying UNP voters of their rights), MR got rid of Praba who trusted MR as an Angel, never dreamed but went down like a rat for cheating Honourable Ranil Wickramasinghe, see what Wimal Weerawangsa is going to be served by MR very soon. A Leader should be a fair and honest person like JR and honoured Leader who died as a statesman.
MR is living in a baloon and very soon it will burst and fools will realise that there is a GOD above.

Which ever government comes into power we as citizens do not gain, prices keep spiralling whilst the pockets of the pliticians fill. Inter Continental ownership is taken over by the MR & Co., Ceylan Towers ownership is taken over by the MR & Co. etc etc. so by the end of his term he can own half of Sri Lanka whilst we as citizens will have to swallow the polluted air in the Galle Face Green. What do we get by supporting these crooks.

Mahinda cannot scrap the constitution single handedly. He should have 2/3 Majority to do so.

Mahinda is the best crook that I have known in the recent history. He has managed to fool majority of the people all the time. This is because we sri lankans more often see things through racial perspectives. That is the reason why we are more happy with the president because he ended the war but how he ended it, nobody is any keen to know. The genocide he commited by killing innocent lives by collateral damages is unacceptable. Though I am relieve the terrorism is no more, a sane person will noway agree to genocide of a community to kill a leader.
This is detrimental to the forward of the country, which is of immense prospect for growth. President Mahinda Rajapakse fool the fools by paying constant visit to temples and prelates. This is the guy who killed lasantha (Sunday Leader) and this is guy who silence all the critics by hook or by crook.
