Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday complained to Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara that the media had deleted certain portions and names in speeches made by Opposition MPs in the House and that amounted to violation of their Parliamentary privileges.
`The media should report everything except things expunged by the chair if the media fails to report fully what we talk today as they are, we ll see to it on Monday,` Wickremesinghe said looking at the press gallery.
He said so soon after a privilege issue raised by UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, who complained that media had misreported the previous day s speech made by his colleague Sagala Ratnayake. He said that MP Ratnayake had mentioned certain names of people, but these names had been omitted by print and electronic media.
MP Ratnayake said that in audio and video tapes the names had been replaced with a `beep` sound had been introduced. `I never said beep beep , but names , he said.
JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that this had happened to his party members speeches, too. `So, the people will soon understand that every `beep` sound stands for Rajapaksa , he said.
Speaker Lokubandara said that he had never ordered the removal or deletion of any names from speeches of MPs, and promised to look into the issue.
