Police officers who had gone through the prosecution course can carry out their duties effectively for the general public understanding their needs and requirements. Around 41 police officers from the Kalutara and Panadura Police Divisions who have successfully completed the two week Prosecution course conducted by the Police Crime Division received their certificates at Police Headquarters yesterday.
Addressing the media IGP Jayantha Wickramaratne said the Prosecution course commenced last December for police officers in the Western Province to extend and improve their knowledge in various fields.
`This course will help police officers to carry out their duty effectively understanding the general publics` needs and requirements`, he added.
The Prosecution course initially was conducted in the Western Province and it will be extended to other provinces in the near future. Around 290 police officers successfully completed this course.
IGP Wickramaratne asserted that the Prosecution course designed for police officers to acquire multiple knowledge in various fields such as crime, management, traffic etc. `Basically, nature of crime varies from place to place and region to region. When a police officer is transferred to another region or a department he/she will find it difficult to handle the new task assigned. The Prosecution course will help the police officers to overcome such situations`, he added.
He said that the Police Department plans to establish 12 police stations in the North and already eight police stations have been established in the North. They are. Omanthai, Puliyankulam, Kanagarayankulam, Mankulam and Kilinochchi police stations along the A-9 road. Widithalthivu, Nachchikuda and Mulankavil along the A-32 main road.
`For the first time in the history of the Police Department, police officers reaching the Jaffna peninsula via the A-9 road conducted interviews to recruit PC`s and WPC`s. And 500 Tamil speaking PC`s and WPC`s were recruited to the Police Department`, he remarked.
The IGP pointed out that a special program was launched to teach and train Tamil language for the PC`s and police officers as part of the police training.
Crime Division Director SSP M.K.D.W.Amarasinghe said the Prosecution course was conducted to establish a Prosecution Unit at each and every police station in the Western Province.
