Plantation Industries Minister D. M. Jayaratne said a new constitution and new laws were necessary to give equality and respect for all the people. He said that to achieve this the support of all parties including the TNA was necessary.
Minister Jayaratne said as the terrorism raged all over the country for 30 years, has been defeated, the country has now become united and peaceful. But among the minorities including the Tamil people who still believe that their self respect, authority and rights and even the human status have been lost. Therefore, the laws of the country have to be changed to suit all the people by changing the constitution to ensure a fair treatment to all.
He said that terrorism has not completely disappeared from the Tamil people living all over the world, and therefore there are possibilities of it raising its head.
Mr. Jayaratne further said that the legal system should be set to be acceptable to all the people of the world including those from South India by providing a system for Tamils, Muslims, Burghers and Malays to receive fair treatment and to be content.
All the people should be treated equally , he said.
