Sri Lanka is one hell of a den of rogues thieves cheats and frauds. Politicians set the examples and the precedents most others simply follow!

[Thus both the scale of corruption, as well as the numbers of the corrupt, was smaller then than now.]

Upto the 50s and perhaps the 60s, there was also much less political interference with the Officials being quite independent of Political pressures and threats. This also contributed to a cleaner Public Service.

Just an incident to illustrate the independence of Officials in the 50s is the interview for Sub Inspectors of Police where a candidate, who didn`t have the required height, had gone with a letter of recommendation from a Politician. The interviewing Officer, I think it was Sydney de Soyza who ended up as IGP I believe, took the letter, placed it on the floor, and asked the candidate to stand on it to measure the height of the candidate. Naturally, that made no difference to the height and, turning to the candidate, he is supposed to have sarcastically remarked, `Son, even with that letter, your height falls short`, and that was the end of the interview.

    Imagine anybody doing that today.
