Methsiri Silva had agreed to give up his fast after receiving a letter of assurance from SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena, delivered to him through Chief Minister Shan Wijelal de Silva. But he said, that he would stick only to liquid foods until the return of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Both Mr. Methsiri Silva and the present Mayor Kelum Seneviratne polled the same number of votes at the last local government polls and there was an agreement that Seneviratne would serve for the first two years and would concede the second two years to Methsiri Silva.
Mayor Kelum Seneviratne failed to keep to the agreement and continued in the post which prompted Methsiri Silva to start a fast unto death opposite the Galle Municipality during the past four days.
Mr. Sirisena said in his letter that he would find a solution within one month and this made Silva relax his stance until the return of the President.
