Iran is willing to share nuclear technology for peaceful purposes with Sri Lanka, the country s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, who was in Colombo to attend the 15th SAARC Summit told The Island.
He said that Iran and Sri Lanka are long standing friends and Iran was willing to assist in all fields, including uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes.
Asked about allegations that Iran, was helping Sri Lanka because it has no friends in the world, Mottaki dismissed them as ridiculous. `Ours is a friendship based on mutual trust and understanding. To impute ulterior motives is michievious to say the least.` he said
`Iran is sincerely committed to the development of Sri Lanka, whom we consider to be a true friend, he said. `Our commitment has already been proved by a pledge of over US$ 450 million in assistance for several Sri Lankan projects, including the Sapugaskanda oil refinery and Uma Oya irrigation scheme,` Mottaki said.
The reciprocal visits of Presidents Mahmoud Ahamdinejad and Mahinda Rajapaksa to each others countries, bear ample testimony to the solid friendship that has stood the test of time, he observed. `Iran, wants to expand economic and commercial ties with all SAARC members including Sri Lanka. We can help the region develop its energy resources and food production among other things.`
Calling for the establishment of an Asian Parliament on the lines of the European Parliament, he said that it could be the first step towards greater integration, which is so vital for development.

This is a very good idea. Colombo should be promoted as the Capital of SAARC. |

| LOL! I like this idea of exploiting Iran's problem to our benefit. I think MR is playing the right cards here. Give them the friendship and get some solid returns. |

Watch out Sri Lanka. It is not LOL !
Conflict between Sunni and Shiite Muslims, is deeper than what many think. Shiite Muslims, are Iran backed while Sunnis are from all the rest of the Arab World plus even in SL, Sunnis are the 90% majority.
Iraq and Iran fought a 6 year war, backed by US. At the end of that conflict, Iraq found that the Sunni Muslims were cheating fellow Iraq on oil revenue. So Iraq turned against Kuwait and Saudis and even today that conflict is not over.
US and the rest of the Sunni Arabs, are deep into it and they will try all possible means, including war, to keep the Iranians Nuclear free and east of Shatt-Al- Arab river that separates the Shiites and Sunnis.
Fully aware of this deep conflict, India and China, are keeping Iran at arms length therefore SL should not get too closer to Iran particularly with the Nuclear Technology. Iran tried the rouge states like N. Korea but they got the message loud and clear and backed out.
Since Iran, have no friends in the Arab world, Europe, North America, Asia too Iran wants to use SL.... and MR cannot manipulate Iran. On contrary Iran wants to manipulate SL to their advantage particularly for Nuclear matters.
MR, his brothers and Dallas A. etc.(all US Citizens) could end up in US... just like Shaah of Iran did many years ago.
Whether we like or not, fair or unfair, SL will be under US observations particularly on Nuclear matters.
So MR and his company should be very careful with Iran and their Carrots !

| Not that easy to land into Nuclear band wagon...but if Sri Lanka can find a alternative for there power demand it seems much cheaper to go nuclear. |

Safe Nuclear power is not cheap. Only Canada has SAFE heavy water reactors. Other countries such as N. Korea etc. wanted to use cheaper version of Nuclear, that would end up with Nuclear weapons too but under world pressure, they withdrew under International Observations and Inspection.
Now it is Iran ....
Biggest problem is the disposal of Nuclear wastes that is presently embedded in concrete and buried in deserts or in international waters ???. But the life of concrete is very much less than that of Nuclear waste. So it is a matter of time .... |

Iran may or may not sincerely want to share Nuclear technology with SL but how will India react? Also the US. On any Iranian involvement with SL, the US and India will work together. Only with financial aid will SL be able to resist any outside interference as SL needs money badly. On others, SL will be turned and twisted by the Big Brother and the Big Power.
The Shia-Sunni difference is no big deal as the Muslims have little say in anything in SL. |

| Both Iran and Slanka are shunned by IC. Both are isolated. Now the two isolated and shunned are comforting each other. Days for this type of unruly and unethical behaviour are numbered. Remeber what happend to Iraq. |

Yes... Saddam Hussein, a Sunnie, was dragged out like rat and executed. Both his sons were shot dead..
That was/is the power of oil rich Sunnies.
If and when Shiite Iran get too close to Nuclear power and Sri Lanka, then MR and brothers and Joker Mervyn, wil have to find a place to hide. Of course MR and brothers, Bogollagama, Dallas A., etc will end up joining their families in US.
Just like CBK, they have enough resources accumulated in the West. |
