The body of a 75-year-old Swiss national was mistakenly sent to Sri Lanka instead of the body of a Sinhala youth who died in Italy. The kith and kin who received the casket containing the body realized that it was not of their loved one only when it was opened by the undertakers at Kekirawa on Sunday.
The sealed coffin was received by the deceased s relations on Saturday night at the Katunayake Airport and the grieving relations took it by a hearse to their native village, Maradankadawala.
It was presumed that the coffin contained the body of a 24-year-old Sri Lankan youth named Ranjith Dissanayake who was drowned in Italy. Soon after realizing that it was not the body of his son, the father of Dissanayake and his relations took the body of the elderly Swiss national and handed it over to the Negombo Hospital Police was informed of the mix up and the question on everybody s mind was as to where the deceased Dissanayake s body was. Had it been sent to Switzerland? and who would bear the cost to bring back the body.
