A six-year-old German Shepherd named Bingo, belonging to a doctor at the Mahamodera Hospital, living in Labuduwa, was buried with full Buddhist rites on Poson Poya Day. The doctor, his wife and son loved the dog so much they were almost in tears when the Buddhist clergy performed the final rites which included Pansakula and Mathakawasthara Puja
Three popular Buddhist monks of the area were invited to the Doctor s residence to perform the last rites on the dead dog before it was buried.
One of the monks, Ven Opatha Saddhananda Thero, in his sermon said that at a time when even the death of a human being is just ignored, it is indeed a great and meritorious act to respect the death of a dog, which is considered man s best friend.
A seventh day alms giving ceremony too has been organised to invoke blessings on Bingo.
