Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge slammed the officials of the Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union when he said that the controversy over Sri Lanka s participants at the upcoming Olympics could have been avoided had they acted more prudently.
Lokuge had previously said that preference would be given to those athletes residing in Sri Lanka in wild card scenarios, but yesterday he told The Island that the swimming officials were to be blamed for the controversy.
`I had a discussion with the swimming officials today and they admitted that they had blundered and that the proper procedgere hadn t been followed. We will hold an inquiry shortly to find out what exactly happened,` Lokuge said.
`We suggested that there should be a trial as we haven t appointed a selection committee still for swimming. All this confusion and controversy could have been easily avoided,` Lokuge said.
Lokuge also confirmed that Mayumi Raheem and Daniel Lee will represent Sri Lanka at the Olympic Games.
Sports Ministry sources, meanwhile, pointed fingers at the Secretary of the Swimming Interim Committee Samantha Ranasinghe for the confusion and added that he had very politely apologized for the mistake.
