What the Tamil Americans expect from the Government of the United States
The above is a Power Point Presentation distributed throughout America by the LTTE activists in America aiming at the American Presidential candidate s selection campaign. This was prepared by a group called TAAF or Tamil Americans and Friends.
Through this power point presentation what the LTTE activists in America attempt is to create an ideology about their problem to the presidential candidates at the forthcoming American presidential election.
In this context they have put more weight on Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton the two Democratic presidential candidates.
Both Obama and Hillary in their election campaign indicated about the Tamil Tigers because the American LTTE Activists have crept into the Democratic Party as a part of their propaganda campaign and have educated these two candidates about the Tamil conflict in Sri Lanka.
Hillary Clinton as given below has mentioned the Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers:
The bottom line is you can t lump all terrorists together .what the Tamil Tigers are fighting for in Sri Lanka , or the Basque separatists in Spain, or the insurgents in al-Anbar Province may not share all that much in terms of what is the philosophical or ideological underpinning
What Obama stated is as follows
The problem of the 20th Century is the problem of the colour line. This problem of the other afflicted places like Sri Lanka , Northern Ireland and the issue of race within the US ..
The LTTE has given wide worldwide publicity to these two statements.
The latest mentor of the LTTE Leader Prabhakaran, K.V.Balakumaran has made an analysis about Hillary Clinton s statement to the Tamileelam TV.
Clinton s statement can be viewed as a revolutionary change in the US thinking
In his analysis he has pointed out that if either Hillary or Obama becomes the President of the US there would be a change in the American thinking towards LTTE and the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka .
The American LTTE Activists under the guise of TAAF made the power point presentation on the Tamil Struggle to try and turn this envisaged change to be advantageous towards them. In that presentation Tamil Americans have stressed that the main thing they expect from the American Government is to remove the ban on the LTTE in the US .
To substantiate their expectations in this Presentation Tamil Americans have quoted the statement made by the American Ambassador in Sri Lanka , Teresita C. Schaffer in 2005. The United States designation of the LTTE as a foreign terrorist organization has affected US Diplomacy in Sri Lanka . The effect of US terrorism law and of the terrorist organization list has been a problem for US diplomacy, and one that has not always been wisely handled
Teresita became the American Ambassador in Sri Lanka , subsequent to Bill Clinton becoming the US President as a Democrat (Democratic Party). In the Clinton administration, the subject Conflict Resolution to establish peace, instead of war throughout the world has became a major international project.
Teresita brought this project to Sri Lanka and she commenced this project in Sri Lanka through the Colombo University . At that point of time the Vice Chancellor was Prof G.L.Peiris. It was through the Think Tank initiated by Teresita which included Prof G.L. Peiris too, that included that there is an ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka and there should be a political solution for that conflict.
They rallied around Chandrika and when the UNP government castigated Prabhakaran as a murderous terrorist, they compared Prabhakaran to Nelson Mandela of South Africa and Yasser Arafat of Palestine . The American Embassy in Sri Lanka which earlier looked at the SLFP suspiciously while working with the UNP government closely, changed its stance once Chandrika accepted the Conflict Resolution Project which was canvassed through Teresita who was appointed here as ambassador by the American Democratic Party and Chandrika included this concept in the SLFP Policy.
But when in 2000 subsequent to George Bush of Republican Party becoming the US President, consequent to 9/11 the Republican Party introduced Counter Terrorism to the world. Through this counter terrorism concept the LTTE was severely affected .
In the forthcoming Presidential Elections, Barack Obama says that he would break the Bush-Cheney diplomacy and he came forward to contest the Presidential candidate with the tag Candidate for Change .
The LTTE is attempting to change American thinking towards them through this tag .
American LTTE activists advanced their influence on the Democratic Party in the election campaign to select the Presidential candidate by getting into the coordination network of a few Democratic Congressmen.
Out of these given below are statements of three of the Democratic Congressmen on the expectations of the LTTE:
I have urged the State Department to design a road map for the Tamil Tigers, so that they would know what steps they would need to take to get off the terrorist list
What is the difference between terrorism on the one hand, and waging a legitimate guerrilla struggle on the other?
Seeking some degree of autonomy for North-East Sri Lanka is not a terrible objective Brad Sherman US Congress Rep 15/3/2006
I echo this sentiment and support a solution that grants a level of autonomy to ethnic minorities like the Tamils. We have seen very similar successful situations throughout the world. Places like Quebec in Canada , Wales and Scotland in Great Britain are all part of their Federal Nations but have significant autonomy. Frank Pallone US Congress Rep (2006)
I urge US Secretary of State Dr Rice to appoint a special envoy to emphasize US commitment to peace in Sri Lanka and to include in the envoy s mandate efforts to increase monitoring of human rights violations .. Rush Holt US Congress Rep (2006)
All these are Democratic Party members and this could demonstrate how far the American LTTE activists have crept into the Democratic Party.
In this backdrop if, black American Barack Obama becomes the American President of the Democratic Party, through Obama s personal background as well as the background of the Democratic Party the LTTE will have high hopes to turn this event to their advantage.
But the LTTE was listed as a terrorist organization, under Democratic Party President, Bill Clinton. They took this decision because the Chandrika Government had proved that the LTTE did not want to find a solution to the conflict by peaceful means.
As the LTTE had proved that they wanted war, the Democratic party s international project Conflict Resolution could not be successfully implemented in Sri Lanka and this was impressed on America by the then Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar. If Obama becomes the President of the United States of America Sri Lanka would need not one Kadirgamar, but several such Kadirgamars.
