There is a military solution to terror - says Wall Street Journal

[Wall Street Journal said in an editorial that President Mahinda Rajapksa of Sri Lanka now promises victory over terrorism by the end of year]

If it`s not achieved for some reason, the reputations of all our pundits would be lost internationally.

So we will buy more fire work from them, keep out of them ,or do not listen to others,!

If the other party is not genuine and reciprocate what else to be done, Force has to be met with full Force, so be with terrorizing.

[If it`s not achieved for some reason, the reputations of all our pundits would be lost internationally. ]

Losing reputation is of little consequence .. compared to what we can expect, if we fail to halt the `miltary thrust` of the LTTE, and convince their leaders that what is `open` to them is only a political `solution`, to be reached with GOSL .. after they have `given-up` arms (willingly or by terms of `surrender`).

If their `military thrust` is success-ful .. the Southern `rump` will be subject to relent-less pressure both military and economic, until its annexure to the Northern unit. (The President is `playing` for `high-stakes` .. for the survival of democratic institutions, and of the Sinhala people & their culture (read this as language and religion). He deserves our support .. so that he may succeed).

By and large, the Tamils of Sri Lanka have three major choices: (1) escape into the Tamil diaspora - the comfort zone sought by all Tamils, including Velupillai Prabhakaran s children (2) be in the tight grip of the one-man regime in the Vanni or (3) join the mainstream politics as in the East, following the example Pilleyan, the ex-Tiger who has transformed into a Chief Minister heading a multi-ethnic Provincial Council.

[...compared to what we can expect, if we fail to halt the `miltary thrust` of the LTTE...]

There couldn`t be any doubts of our failing to halt the `military thrust` of the LTTE as the army commander has `vowed` to defeat the LTTE, kill VP and end terrorism in Sri Lanka by the end of 2008.

However it would be good if our pundits could first `finish the job` and then do the talking, without doing all the `big talk first` to very likely go home with the tail between the legs.

[There`s also a tendency to misjudge the aims and ambitions of the insurgents: To think they can be mollified via one political concession or another. Former Colombian president Andres Pastrana sought to appease the FARC by ceding to them a territory the size of Switzerland . The predictable result was to embolden the guerrillas, who were adept at sensing and exploiting weakness.

The deeper problem here is the belief that the best way to deal with insurgents is to address the `root causes` of the grievance that purportedly prompted them to take up arms. But what most of these insurgencies seek isn`t social or moral redress: It`s absolute power.]

This is exactly what is happening in Sri Lanka. LTTE wanted to strenghten their power in the territory they had control over with a bogus CFA and both LTTE and LTTE supporting Diaspora are less interested in addressing the root casue of the problem such as the langauge issue and discrimination at higher education which led to the ethnic conflict. They harp on the fact that they are not been given autonomy in North and East.

LTTE did not want peace. During the last presidential election, they plotted against the UNP and their own members like Karuna in the East. That is how Karuna became an opponent of the LTTE who wanted a weaker candidate to win the election.

Why did GOSL secretly issued diplomatic papers to Karuna enabling him to disappear into UK but that did not work. When Karuna is returned to SL eventually, he may not be imprisoned or taken to courts. Let us see who are the real terrorists and traitors !

MR and his family has the capability to demilish LTTE and its function in Sri Lanka. Generally MR is a thugery type politicians and he can do what he wants. His brothers too will not easily defeated. Many of our leaders did not have such family background and this helps MR to work according to his agenda. LTTE was appear to be powerful because we did not have good leader who can face challenges.

[ That is how Karuna became an opponent of the LTTE who wanted a weaker candidate to win the election. ]

Karuna was promised the East by Ranil and Mahinda but he is a fool not to know that Sinhalese leaders never keep their promises or homour any agreement they sign (BC- Pact, SC Pact, CFA and P-TOMS).

He was smuggled by Gotabaya Rajapakse on a forged passport to LOndon to be locked up in prison.

Can there be a bigger fool that Karuna?

    Impossible!
