The coaching wing of Sri Lanka Cricket was moved to R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium and the new premises of SLC was declared opened, by the Chairman of the Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket Arjuna Ranatunga, yesterday. This means the entire coaching staff of SLC will be housed at the R. Premadasa Stadium, instead of Maitland Place, the home of Sri Lankan cricket.
Sri Lanka Cricket took the R. Premadasa Stadium under its wing last year and positioning its coaching wing at the floodlit venue is a practical one indeed. The R. Premadasa Stadium also houses the Cricket Academy of SLC and along with the academy players, it also helps to work with the contracted and age group players of SLC.
Jerome Jayaratne, a qualified cricket coach and an employee of SLC for eight years, will function as the Head of the Coaching Department with all coaches of the national, A team and age group teams coming under him.
`Maitland Place wasn t the right place to house our coaches. After taking over the R. Premadasa Stadium, we felt that this is the ideal place to house our coaches as it has the most facilities,` CEO of SLC, Duleep Mendis said at the opening of the new premises.
`Apart from the facilities we have here, SLC is contemplating putting up a swimming pool and indoor net facilities, a physiotherapy unit and a gymnasium at this location,` Mendis added.
Accordingly, District and Provincial coaches and all other departments connected to coaching such as physiotherapy, training, IT will be brought to the R. Premadasa Stadium with Maitland Place only carrying out the administrative functions of Sri Lanka Cricket.
`On behalf of the coaching staff we thank the Interim Committee for giving us a brand new office complex. Having been in the board for some years now, I feel this is a major step forward,` Jayaratne said.
