In the latest political fiasco, the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has rented out the party symbol elephant to a political turncoat SLMC leader Rauf Hakim to contest the Eastern Provincial Council after continuing to lose election after election from 1994, spokesman of UNP rebel group R.A.D.Sirisena told The Island yesterday (2).
Wickremesinghe had entered into a political marriage with a person notorious for gaining his own ends by tying up with the SLFP and the UNP and suddenly crossing over to the other side about five times. From 1989, the SLMC was shifting its allegiance from party to party to gain power but without a consistent policy. In 1994 it gave its support to the SLFP and again in 2001 it started supporting the UNP to get porfolies and again in 2007 it joined the Mahinda Rajapaksa government and yet again in December 2007 it crossed over to the Opposition, he said.
However the UNP leader who did not know the cultural values of the country, had gone to village fairs, got petitions signed and was now asking housewives to crack the pots of rice in protest not knowing that keeping the rice pot on the fire was a solemn ritual of housewives in this country, he said.
He said the UNP mindset today was on the negative side while the Government working positively had reduced the North East problem to a problem in the North winning the hearts of the people of the East.
