The Kelaniya flyover will be opened today easing congestion on the Colombo-Kandy road. The project was completed in just 60 days setting a world record.

Highways and Road Development Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle told the Daily News that the feat represented a new landmark in the highways and roads development sector.

This construction is a world record since the assembly of the prefabricated flyover was completed within 60 days, he said.

The record was earlier held by the Philippines. The Philippines Government completed assembling the prefabricated Malos flyover in Manila in 66 days. It is 300 meters in length.

This was the first flyover built under the Government s project to construct 222 bridges countrywide.

The length of the Kelaniya flyover is 325 meters. Under the first phase of the Kelaniya flyover, two lanes have been constructed. The second phase of the project is due to commence next month with the intention of constructing two lanes. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs. 2.1 billion.

He said the Kelaniya flyover was built across the Peliyagoda railway crossing on the Colombo-Kandy main road to ease traffic congestion.

He said the Government has also embarked on a project to construct 20 flyovers and 218 bridges islandwide with Sterling Pounds 125 million assistance from the British Government.

A British Company in collaboration with the Access Engineering Company carried out the construction of the flyover.

According to the Railway Control Room, the Peliyagoda railway crossing is closed cumulatively eight hours a day.

He said around 75,000 vehicles travel along the railway crossing per day and it is a huge time waste due to traffic congestion. The Ministry is planing to commence the construction of the second flyover in Panadura on March 31.

MR's government's profile got ONE thing to be mentioned now....

anyhow, it is a great work..... regardless the percentage went into politicians' pockets

I think, instead of having flyover (for vehicles), it is much easier and less expensive to have tunnels (for train) at railway crossing points

The Kelaniya flyover will be setting a world record

Oh Yes! There are more! The Matara Kataragama Railway, The Hambantota Port, The Weerawila Air Port, The Colombo Metro, The electric trains from Colombo to Ragama, inflation @ 25%, printing Rs.45 billion in 4 months AND last but not least the Cabinet of 109 Ministers!!

Hope the flyover will not come down in 30 days. If so that too will add to the records!!

The Katunayake-Colombo highway would also be a world record if completed 'as the 40KM highway that was built over 20 years'

(March 26, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa opened the flyover at Thorana Junction, Peliyagoda today (25th) at 7.00 am. It was auspicious time for opening according to President s horoscope.

The Sri Lanka Guardian correspondent was travelling on the new flyover at Widyalankara Piriwena in Paliyagoda when President Mahinda and other key officials were seen walking to cross over the flyover. We all walked together throughout the whole of the flyover and what we saw was utter disappointment and disgrace to the Sri Lanka society.

Summarily dismissed minister Mervyn Silva and his goons have exhibited thousands of cut-outs, banners and posters on the highway. Writings and pictures therein promoted the extremist Mervyn. When I asked one of my colleagues, who had done this, he flatly said it is Mervyn s works. We all laughed and exchanged our views about the sorry state of affairs in the country.

According to reports, the iron flyover was completed on record time. All the work had been done within 61 days.

The record was earlier held by Philippines. In Philippines, the prefabricated Malos flyover in Manila was assembled in 66 days. It is 300 meters in length.

It is expected the new flyover will ease congestion on the Colombo-Kandy road.

This was the first flyover built under the government's projected plan to construct 222 such bridges countrywide. This flyover is 325 meters in length and in the first phase, it will have two lanes. The second phase of the project which is due to commence next month, will add two more lanes. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs. 2.1 billion.

A British Company in collaboration with Access Engineering Ltd carried out the construction of this flyover.

The whole exercise of building this noteworthy flyover has become a fiasco. It has become an eyesore with full of Mervyn Silva s publicity materials.

When he was Labour Minister Mervyn he did nothing for the flyover. How does he get the time to do any constructive work when he his preoccupied with thuggary and violence to control the civil society. However, they know how to exploit the flyover when it stands up with all the publicity given in the media.

The pictures produced herein will confirm the degrading state of affairs of the politician like Mervyn Silva. The eyesore images confirm needing some serious legal and regulatory enforcement against such blatant violators.

This is a typical example of widespread unacceptable conduct of politicians and pandankarayas that is progressively rotting our establish culture of good behaving people.

Well Dr Mervin
