The 34th annual Battle of the Maroons between traditional rival Ananda and Nalanda Colleges, Colombo ended in dramatic fashion as Ananda were declared winner by 3 runs according to the Parabola system played at SCC grounds, at Maitland Place, on Sunday.
The match was restricted to 32 overs per side due to overnight rain. Nalanda won the toss and put the opposition in and in return Ananda made 178 runs for the lost of 8 wickets in their allotted 32 overs.
Ishara Wickramasinghe top scored with 40 runs. Probadha Senevirathne and Udara Jayasundara chipped in with useful scores of 39 runs and 36 runs, respectively.
Madawa Warnapura and Nipun Karunanayake of Nalanda College were the pick of the bowlers as they captured two wickets each for 30 and 23 runs, respectively.
Chasing 179 runs for victory, Nalanda College were cruising along smoothly when bad light stopped play. Nalanda were 125 for the loss of 3 wickets in 20.2 overs and were well placed for the onslaught with wickets intact.
Dilshan Munaweera was the star of the day as he cracked a nearly match winning half century (76). But his effort was in vain as Ananda was declared the winner, according to the Parabola system.
