The UNP yesterday requested in Parliament the Government to increase the security of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe due to the present volatile security situation.
UNP Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake told the House that he was astonished to see Mr. Wickremesinghe arriving in an ordinary vehicle to pay his last respects to the students of D.S. Senanayake Maha Vidyalaya killed in the recent bomb blast at the Colombo Fort Railway station.
I found on inquiry, that the Opposition Leader has not been provided with a bullet proof vehicle as his bullet proof vehicle had been withdrawn by the Government, he said.
When Mr. Wickremesinghe was the Prime Minister he acted to provide adequate security to the late Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar who was in the opposition at that time, he said.
Chief Opposition Whip Joseph Michael Perera also said that the Government should provide back up vehicles to Parliamentarians as agreed previously.
He said the number of security personnel provided to each Parliamentarians had been increased by two.
However, we cannot accommodate all of them in our vehicle. So, we need a back up vehicle, he said.
Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake replied that he would look into the matter of providing back up vehicles to the MPs.
The Prime Minister also said that he would certainly look into the security issue of the Opposition Leader.
I did not know it till you raised it today, he told Mr. Karunanayake.
