A portrait of former President Ranasinghe Premada will be unveiled by President Mahinda Rajapakse on Thursday (07) at the Parliamentary complex.
President Ranasinghe Premadasa who started his political career as a Member of the Colombo Municipal Council became the Member of Parliament for Colombo Central electorate and was appointed Deputy Minister of Local Government in the 1965-70 government of Dudley Senanayake and later became the Local Government and Housing when the Minister M.C.Tiruchelvam resigned from that government.
In the 1977 UNP government Ranasinghe Premadasa became the Prime Minister and the Minister for Housing and Local Government. He successfully contested the 1989 Presidential Election and was elected the second Executive President.
President Premadasa was also known as the common man s president and was well known for his successful housing and village reawakening project Gam Udawa and his poverty alleviation programme Jana Saviya and for the development of infrastructure in the city and remote areas.
He was assassinated during the May Day 1993 at a rally in Colombo.
