A social survey has revealed that 90% of the beggar population of Colombo city does not expect any benefit from state or any other organization.

The survey carried out by an independent body exposes amazing facts.

50% of the beggars are against granting houses or lands to them. 84% are against somebody providing them an employment. 90% are against social benefits and the majority of them like to remain as beggars.

79% of these beggars are physically sound. Only 21% are disabled beggars.

The majority of the beggars are Sinhalese. They account to 61% while 29% are Tamils and 19% are Muslims. 72% of the beggars are males while 28% are females. 70% are adults whilst 10% are children and 20% are aged persons.

60% are begging in the day time while 37% do it in the night. For 3%, there is no proper time.

The survey concludes that the members of this social stratum are total outsiders from the average society.

Ethnic % is in correct. 61,29 &19 gives 109. Doubt abut the accuracy of others too.

even if a country is developed to an extent that unemployment is hard to find... there will still be beggars..that is a common fact.. considering what I have seen and heard from developed countries it was surprising to find people homeless and on the streets.. so Sri Lanka is no exception... but from what I have heard about beggars in Sri Lanka they earn quite a lot of money on a daily basis...

Mr. Brown that's right. May be there is a mis-print. Should the ratio for the Tamils be 20% I/O 29 or the Muslims be 10% I/O 19?

I searched the AP web site but can't find anything about this Survey.

Over to you Mr. Brown for further clarification.

10% are children

What is the percentage of children in LTTE? - expressed as a percentage of total LTTE cadre?

LTTE has NO child soldiers any more. Don't you know that? Strange.

Another NGO ploy...What more can you expect. They surely don't know how to get their figures right.
