A special telephone hotline has been introduced to report of any instances that children are exposed to pornographic materials through mobile phones, Minister of Child Development and Women`s Empowerment Minister Mrs. Sumedha G. Jayasena announced.
This was revealed at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department Auditorium yesterday (01) in connection with launching a service and a hot line ( 0117- 221 777 ) to prevent children from accessing pornographic contents on the Internet through Dialog mobile phones. Minister Jayasena said that she hopes to extend the same to other mobile phone operators in future.
Accordingly the Ministry has singed a MoU with Dialog Telekom to restrict children accessing inappropriate websites on the Internet.
The Chairman of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) speaking to the www.news.lk said that this move has been taken in accordance with the President Mahinda Rajapaksa`s policy to protect children from internet pornography an issue that the President highlighted during his address to the UN General Assembly.
The Ministry seeks the assistance of general public in implementing these measures in a more effective and efficient manner.

This is just another none too subtle erosion of fundamental rights. I suppose tamilnet had pornography and thats why it is blocked ?

As long as it is only the restriction of children accessing pornography over the internet - it's a good move. Children should be protected and their access to pornographic content on the internet shoud certainly be restricted.
The rights of adults however to access any material deemed to be pornographic will still be protected. |

Authorities should better concentrate their efforts on the streets where loads of SL pimps are selling infants to perverted locals and foreigners.
In addition young girls need much more protection and help in thousands of abuse case as well as abusers and rapists deserve much more drastic punishment. |
