The suspect, Valentine Colin Jonathan, taken into custody in connection with the assassination of UNP parliamentarian T. Maheswaran at Colombo on Tuesday (1), had been working as a painter at Wattala, police investigations had revealed.
He had been residing temporarily at the home of the mother of one of his friends at Wattala for the past 10 months and is Roman Catholic Tamil, police sources said.
A Police team, searching the house where Jonathan lived, had found six cartridges used in 9 mm pistols hidden in the bathroom of the house.
The suspect was warded at the National Hospital Colombo but the police could not get a statement from him up to noon yesterday. The motive for killing the parliamentarian was still unknown and police have not been able to ascertain whether he belonged to any political or terrorists group in the north, sourced noted.
However, he had earlier made a number of statements that contradicted one another but police said they could not rely on any of the information given by him so far.
Jonathan had sustained injuries to one of his arms and a side of his face but his injuries were not critical National Hospital sources said.
The Colombo Police Crimes Division is conducting investigation under the direction of DIG Colombo, Nimal Mediwaka.
