Chairmen of Pradeshiya Sabhas, Divisional Secretaries, School principals and Secretaries to Provincial Ministries are among the suspects arrested by the Bribery Commission. But policemen and grama sevakas continue to top the list of bribe takers with the Commission recording the arrest of 20 law enforcement personnel and 10 village-headmen.
SSP Neville Guruge, the senior officer in charge of investigations, attributed their success to a significant increase in the number of complaints received by the Commission.
Addressing a recent public gathering at Anuradhapura, Guruge said that they had conducted 132 raids so far this year. Of them 56 raids had been successful.
`We received 966 public complaints this year.` Of them, 130 complaints had been related to raids, 466 complaints on corruption, 275 complaints on various allegations and 93 complaints relating to assets.
In comparison to the complaints received in 2006, there had been an increase this year.
