Several SLFP and UNP Democratic Group Parliamen-tarians will never condone the threatening behaviour of Mervyn Silva in public. On several occasions he has threatened to shoot his opponents and be a law unto himself. It is the responsibility of the SLFP Disciplinary Committee to take appropriate action against Minister Silva`s before he tarnishes the image of the government. `He is not a mature politician and his son has brought discredit to the government,` Supplementary Crop Development Deputy Minister Dharmadasa Banda said at a media conference organised by the UNP Democratic Group at Seth Sevana yesterday.
Banda said that the UNP Democratic Group would apologise for the insulting remarks made by the Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe against the Chamber of Commerce. He had also said that the government was concerned over the decisions taken by the UNP-Mangala faction in Getembe Kandy. Nobody knew the secret decisions taken at the meeting, but the Democratic Group knew from a reliable source that the meeting was convened to get the approval from party members to the MoU signed between the UNP and Mangala, Sripathy faction.
He said that the UNP Democratic Group did not forget that the present UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka and its President Rukman Senanayaka had tendered their resignations to Mr. Wickremasinghe, but later, as they were offered higher positions, they kept silent. Tissa Attanayaka had also called a meeting of few UNPers and put the blame on Ranil Wickremasinghe for the election defeat in 2004.
Bandara noted that the UNP leader had also decided to expel 11 UNPers from the Executive Committee and the 11 UNPers had no alternative but to refer the Case to the Courts. In response to their action the Court had issued an injunction on the UNP not to expel the 11 until the proceedings were over.
