On the request of the family, the Colombo Magistrate ordered the cremation of the body of 17-year-old German youth Rito Carl Joseph Steurer who was found dead at the Royal Park condominium premises on Monday, September 4.
Filing an affidavit through attorney-at-law Upali Gunaratne, the father of the youth Dr. Roland Steurer, Director of German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), informed court that he did not suspect foul play.
Court was informed that the boy had sent SMSs with a message `Sorry` to his mother at 2.09.48 am on September 4 and to his father at 2.09.57 am. After that he had called his sister in Switzerland.
The father informed court that the boy was brought up in Salzburg in Austria and all his friends and relatives lived there.
The family made an application to cremate the body in Sri Lanka and take the ashes to Austria to be interred in the family burial ground.
At this stage, Welikada Police objected to the application to cremate the body. Welikada Police Crime OIC SI Lakmal Jayawickrema informed court that the death was suspicious and if any crime had taken place the body would be needed for further investigations.
Additional Magistrate Ajith Anavaratne inquired whether the body would be needed if the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) had taken charge of vital parts, to which the police had no objections.
Crime OIC, SI Jayawardena informed court that the police had to investigate the places visited by the others who were with the deceased prior to his death.
