A man who conned is way through 26 years as a cop and even managed to have his son employed by the Sri Lanka Police as a Constable while using all the perks a policeman enjoys, such as free travel passes and over all that the respect of his neighbours, was unmasked on Tuesday by the Matugama Police, when he was at his residence at Meegahatenne.
The last position he held in his bogus police domain was Sub Inspector attached to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), where he was not expected to be in uniform. However, he had a different type of uniform. He was genuinely employed as a security guard for a long period in a company in Modera.
He was drawing a salary of Rs 17,000 a month as a security guard and dutifully handed over the money to his wife inserted in a police pay packet
Investigations had revealed that he had not resorted to any criminal activities like robbery, extortion, bribery etc.
in the guise of a policeman, except enjoying the little perks a cop is entitled to. But, what on earth made him to resort to this Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde dual role?
It was all for the love of his wife, whom he married 26 years ago, posing as a policeman. He had police uniforms and other paraphernalia, such as batons, and gallantry medals that go with the uniform, at his home in Meegahatenne. His service weapon was a fake pistol that fooled everyone.
After a few years of marriage he started adding regular stripes to the uniform and when he was at the level of sergeant he had produced a letter, purported to have been issued by the Police Headquarters, congratulating him on his promotion. From the next day a metal piece with three stripes adorned the right arm of his uniform.
His son, now attached to the Valaichenai Police, is to be arrested and interdicted while the Grama Sevaka, who visited his house to check on the son`s credibility and confirmed that he was the son of a genuine policeman, is to be questioned. The son was attached to the Valaichenai Police at the time of his father`s arrest. Another son is a tuition master.
The suspect was due to be produced in Court yesterday afternoon. Investigations are being conducted by a team of Policemen headed by Chief Inspector Pragathi Lakmani.
