While `Dawn of the East` day celebrations held in Colombo failed to evoke public excitement in the capital, Sri Lankan government`s efforts to celebrate the event in the Jaffna peninsula met similar fate, as Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Government institutions displayed low enthusiasm in carrying out the government`s instructions to celebrate, sources in Jaffna said. The National flag, with the lion bearing the sword, hoisted at the Jaffna Government Secretariat Thursday early morning, was also lowered after a few hours, the sources added.
The numerous SLA posts scattered over the peninsula did not show any vigorous signs of celebrating the SLA capture of the East, local residents said.
However, the SLA troops in Jaffna peninsula were extra vigilant in inspecting all vehicles and the public entering Jaffna town by the key roads as well as minor avenues.
Meanwhile, the SLA which had been launching heavy, sustained rocket and artillery fire from Thenmaraadchi, Jaffna and the islets of Jaffna on the Liberation Tigers held territories in the past three days, soften the offensives Thursday, local residents observed.
