Opposiion leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has discredited Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka since he has criticised the Ven. Ellawala Madananda Thera for purchasing a Mercedes Benz. The Opposition leader has also made derogatory remarks on the Buddhist Order, Secretary of the UNP Democratic Group, Parliamentarian R. A. D. Sirisena told the media at Sethsewana yesterday.
He said the UNP leader, on the pretext of engaging in party activities on the lines of Theravada Buddhism, had insulted the Buddhist clergy. Sirisena apologized to the JHU on behalf of Wickremesinghe.
He said that around 78 per cent of Sri Lanka`s population were Buddhists and it would be advisable for the Buddhist clergy to complain to the Asgiriya and Malwatte Mahanayakas for any insult made by the UNP leader.
