A powerful claymore mine, weighing 20 kilos, was found by the Borella Police yesterday in Skanda Devale Road, Obeysekerapura. Preliminary investigations revealed that the mine had been transported from Vavuniya in a government vehicle. Police believe it was kept buried to be used in the future on a VIP travelling to Parliament.
The mine was brought on Monday in a vehicle belonging to the Kilinochchi Local Government Department. The cab was seen parked at Gothami Road. Some people had seen the diesel tank of the vehicle being removed and after some time another diesel tank being fitted. They tipped off the Police.
When the Police arrived at the scene, three youth were fitting the diesel tank. At first they denied any knowledge of illegal activity. They had insisted that they were on an official mission to Colombo.
On further interrogation they had led the Police to Obeysekerapura and showed the place where the claymore mine was buried. Police also arrested the owner of the land where the mine was buried and he was being questioned at the time of going to press
Police believe that since it was a Government vehicle with the official emblem escaped security checks throughout its journey from Vavuniya. Borella and Welikada Police are jointly investigating.
