Minister of Industrial Development and `Ranaviru` Welfare Kumara Welgama says that the main goal behind the construction of Puttalam Industrial Estate is to provide 4000 employment opportunities.
To achieve the targets set by `Mahinda Chinthanaya` steps have been taken to allocate 50- acre plot adjoining the Holcim Cement Factory at Puttalam to start factories. The Government will spend Rs.100 million for the development of Infranstructure facilities such as roads, water, electricity, telephones etc. in the Industrial Estate and has planed to complete all infrastructure facilities before December 2008. Also it is expected to open 20 - 25 industries related to brass, iron, apparel, and clay in this industrial park.
After unveiling the commemorative plaque of the Puttalam New Industrial Estate, the Minister stated that the Industrial Estate in Puttalam was the 18th Industrial Estate constructed after assuming the duties as the Minister of Industrial Development.
Minister Kumara Welgama said, in the past the employment opportunities centred in the city of Colombo. It had now gone to regional level as a large number gets employed after the implementation of `Gamata Karmantha` Project. Also he said there were over 4000 employment opportunities generated for the intelligent, educated, active youth in the area.
He further stated that unutilized youth labour was a major obstacle for the development of the country and the Minister of Industrial Development has taken measures to identify the different skills among the youth to provide employment opportunities to build a strong economy and there by providing better living standard in every aspect.
Milroy Fernando, Minister of Plantation Industries, D.M.Dasanayake Minister of Nation Building, Dayasiri Thisera, Minister of Skills Development were also participated in the opening ceremony of this Industrial Estate.
D.M.Dasanayake, Minister of Nation Building stated that, the industries which were limited to the Colombo and Gampaha Districts has now gone to the village level under the Policies of `Mahinda Chinthanaya` providing benefits to the youth in the village. He also thanked to the Minister Kumara Welgama, the Minister of Industries Development for taking measures to build an Industrial Estate in a remote area like Puttalam and requested to obtain the labour which use to build the industrial Estate and the necessary materials such as metal, sand, etc. from the area itself.
