Two persons, who posed off as plainclothesmen, had been attacked by villagers at Labuwewa, Mihintale on Friday. Villagers had confronted them when they were engaged in checking national identity cards and making inquiries about those who were engaged in the illicit kassippu trade.
Police identified them as extortionists.
A group of people had pounced on them soon when they failed to establish their identity as police officers. `They had been assaulted and tied to a tree by villagers before we were called,` Sub Inspector Sanjeewa Mahanama, the Officer-in-Charge of Mihintale police said.
